The coal ash spill from Duke Energy coated 70 miles of the Dan River.Duke Energy claimed that a pipe had burst causing the coal ash spill.  Duke Energy was fined for the coal ash spill in the Dan River. The massive coal ash spill in the Dan River in  North Carolina was a crime and it was a result of the failures by Duke Energy according to Assistant Attorney General John C. Cruden. In 2014,the Environmental Protection Agency entered a cleanup agreement with  Duke Energy to pay restitution to address the spill and to remove the coal ash deposits along the river. The coal ash spill posed an economic threat to businesses that depended on the river for profit. There have been different conversations going on  concerning the price that Duke Energy would have to pay to Rockingham County for the contamination of their river. People from the community and state environmental agencies teamed up to help fix the pipe and stop the coal ash deposit from going into the river. This event stood out to me because it was shocking to see the nations largest electric company have this happen to them. There was no environmental racism in this situation Duke Energy took responsibility for what happened.
